Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has never bowed, nor will she ever bow, to anyone under any circumstances. If a royal lady wants to show deference to another royal person who outranks her, she would drop a curtsy as a show of adherence to protocol.
Before she inherited the throne of the United Kingdom, Princess Elizabeth would curtsy to foreign royalty and those in her own family who held a higher status. This even included her own parents, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, when entering a room where they were. She was also taught at a young age to show the proper respect to her grandparents, King George V and Queen Mary, upon meeting them.
At the conclusion of King George VI’s funeral in 1952, newsreel cameras captured the image of the small, black clad figure of Britain’s new Queen showing the proper gesture of respect.
She lifted the hem of her skirt and dropped a deep curtsy to her father’s casket. It was the last one she would ever make.
